Xinsu Community in SIP’s Loufeng Sub-district recently hosted an event to increase residents’ understanding of Winter Solstice (also known as “Dong Zhi” in Chinese), the 22nd of the 24 Solar Terms on the Chinese lunar calendar, and also offer a chance for family bonding.

The event started with a performance where adorable “animals”, played by a group of children, followed the “Grandpa Winter” to explore the astronomical meaning and cultural significance of Winter Solstice and the differences in folk customs related to it in the northern and southern parts of the country.
After that, the participants made massage hammers containing mugwort, a herb good for health according to traditional Chinese medicine, and learned to use it.
The participants also made and enjoyed tangyuan (stuffed small dumpling balls made of glutinous rice flour), which symbolizes “reunion” in traditional Chinese culture.
